Crate  Training

What is a crate? Will my puppy like it?

A crate is a place for your puppy to go to when it wants left alone or because you are so busy that you can’t watch him all the time. A lot of people are upset about putting their pup in a crate, but really people are disgusted when they see this same puppy making a mess on carpets or chew the end of our furniture!!

A crate will cut your housetraining time in half.

A dog crate is a sanctuary for your pet.  My dogs run to their crates when I have to go out because they feel safe in there when they can’t be with me.

If you allow your puppy to eliminate everywhere he wants in your home, you will end up with an adult dog that will always have a tendency to want to eliminate in your home. You will have to live with it forever, or go through some time – consuming and retraining later on. A dog is either housetrained or it isn’t.  There is no such thing as “weekly accident’s.”  A truly housetrained dog will NEVER go in your house unless forced to do so, or because of illness.

Don’t expect your puppy to be reliably housetrained until it is at least 6 months old.

Your puppy’s early toilet habits are CRITICAL

Will my puppy like it in a crate?

When you first put your puppy in to his/her crate, it will most likely wine and fuss. But the best thing to do is keep trying it will adjust in time. Remenber your puppy just left all its littermates, and mom.!!

Also I   intoduce   our puppies when they are about ready to go to new homes so they have a idea when they leave what a crate is.

The crate is comfortable to your puppy because, like its ancestors , he/she instinctively seeks the safety of a den.

When puppies are left all own and allowed to roam too large  an area, they become anxious, lonely  and bored. By using a pet crate, the owner creates positive behavioral patterns which enable the relationship between the  puppy and its owner to develop and grow.

To help your puppy adjust to the idea of being in the crate, it is very important !

  1. Never give into your puppy’s wining because(if you do it will never  cooperate)
  2. Provide your puppy with a chew toy(find one that your puppy really likes)
  3. Make sure you are giving your puppy lots of play time and attention during the times its not in the crate.A puppy who has had a very active playtime will love nothing more then a quiet place to sleep!

Well now that I talked you into a crate, What kind do you need?

It is not necessary to buy the most expensive crate. I really like the wire crates like the golden that is on the picture on this page.I feel the wire crates let good air ciculation and also let the puppy see its surroundings  so it doesn’t feel all  alone.

Also a wire crate will let your puppy see where strange noises are coming from,it may become frightened and develop bad habits.
